Stratford Grandmother Denied Trial Over School Residency Issue

A Stratford woman charged with larceny for sending her two grandsons to schools here -- while their mother was legally living in Milford --  was denied a civil trial seeking to recoup the restitution paid to the school district and her legal fees, the AP reports.

According to an AP article on CTPost.com, the grandmother, Marie Menard, went through an accelerated rehabilitation program and paid $19,000 in court-ordered restitution as part of her plea deal.

However, with the enacting of recent legislation that prohibits arrests for residency issues, Menard’s lawyer, Josephine Miller, filed for a juried trial.

“Had that law been in effect, she would not have been arrested,” the AP quotes Rep. Bruce Morris (D-Norwalk) stating during a press conference after the decision to deny the trial.

Menard was seeking to recover $19,000 in restitution awarded to Stratford schools by the courts and $7,000 in legal bills.
