FLASHPOLL: Romney Trumps Obama in Debate, CT Political Insiders Agree

Mitt Romney and Barack Obama traded verbal jousts in the first presidential debate of the 2012 campaign, and the consensus was that Romney came out the victor.

In the immediate aftermath of the first presidential debate, held at the University of Denver Wednesday night and moderated by PBS’ Jim Lehrer, it seems that influential Connecticut Republicans and Democrats agree on one thing: Mitt Romney won the night.

In Patch Red Nutmeg and Blue Nutmeg FlashPolls of political influencers from both sides of the aisle taken just after the debate ended, all but one of the respondents said they thought Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, had won the debate.

In fact, 12 of 15 Republicans who answered the late-night survey thought Romney had won by “a large margin,” while two of the three Democrats who answered the question thought Romney had won by a slim margin. A lone Democratic respondent thought Obama won by a wide margin.

“Mitt Romney appeared confident and presidential,” one Republican surveyed said. “Obama appeared frazzled because it's been years since his prepared statements have been challenged.”

In response to the question, “Who will be the consensus winner as declared by the national media,” though, the results were mixed. Most still thought Romney would be declared the winner, but two Republicans were “neutral” on the question, and one thought Obama would be tabbed the winner by a slim margin. All three Democrats thought Romney would be declared the winner.

There was disagreement among the Republicans on the question of what would resonate the most among Connecticut conservatives. Some thought Romney’s articulation of his tax plan and how it would help grow the economy and help middle-class families would energize the state’s Republicans, while others pointed to his argument for putting health care back in the hands of the states and his branding of Obama’s “trickle-down government philosophy.”

All the Republican respondents thought that Romney’s debate performance either strongly or somewhat improved his chances of winning the presidency in November.

Among Republican respondents, the excitement over Romney’s performance was evident.

“Governor Romney inspired excitement and enthusiasm in his base and the independent voters that cannot be duplicated by the Democratic base that is simply crossing its fingers and hoping for the best,” one GOP respondent said. “Bravo to our next President Mitt Romney.”

“Mitt was brilliant and the president missed his teleprompter,” another said.

One Republican respondent was more muted in his outlook.

“Romney still has ground to make up, but his performance tonight should move some undecided voters his way,” he said.

One Democratic respondent to the FlashPoll thought Obama drew a clear line between his economic strategy and Romney’s, but another was disappointed that “Obama did not challenge Romney on the ‘47%’ comment” and thought the Republican candidate “made a fairly good case for his jobs plan.”

None of the Democrats exuded much confidence that Obama made a great case for re-election; two of them were “neutral” on the question of whether the president’s performance made it more likely that he would earn another term in office and one “somewhat disagreed.”

“I’m very disappointed in President Obama’s energy levels tonight,” one Democrat said.

Patch’s surveys are not a scientific random sample of any larger population but rather an effort to listen to a swath of influential local Republican and Democratic activists, party leaders and elected officials in Connecticut. All of these individuals have agreed to participate in the surveys, although not all responded to Wednesday night's questions. Surveys were conducted between 10:30 and midnight on Oct. 3.

Patch will be conducting Red Nutmeg and Blue Nutmeg surveys throughout 2012 in hopes of determining the true sentiment of conservatives and liberals on the ground in Connecticut. If you are an activist, party leader or elected official and would like to take part in weekly surveys that lasts just a few minutes, please email Regional Editor Corey Fyke at corey@patch.com.

Romney's been on such a downward slide that any kind of bone cast his way is something, even if took lying with style to get it. Will his performance transcend him the way it did in the primaries against a cadre of bumbling psychopaths? Not a chance, but at least the rightwing tea party central core that now takes up most of the Republican Party will have a little gristle to chew on for a few days.
Obama remained fact-based and spot-on in pointing out Romney's many, many pants on fire moments. Fact-checkers will have a hayday pointing them out. Hopefully, the American public that will count at the polls in deciding this thing won't be swayed by a frantically flip flopping court jester.

If you want to vote for the continued downspiraling of the United States, then by all means vote with your heart for the lackluster president. He's a real joke. Romney 1,The Prez (big goose egg)

Bob, if you see the art of choosing a President as a WWE wrestling event, fine. Mitt knew how to fake moves and sucker punch with tremendous audacity to make even Linda McMahon assign him to center ring if when he loses in November. Both will need the work after elections.
I imagine that most Republicans will now side with Mitt, even though he distanced himself from their tea party rank and file last night (you might want to check in with Mitt's campaign as they are doing damage control for their base and advertisers) The real entertainment comes in the next few weeks as we wait to see where Mitt lands minute by minute on issues. I've got my popcorn ready.

Gov Romney won on style but lost on substance. He misrepresented his own well-established position often and with such passion he might be called a 'liar.' I'm sorry President Obama wasn't in better form. He could easily have dropped him in his tracks simply by calling him out on the conflicts with what he had said before.
Rose B October 5, 2012 at 01:11 pm
Now I'm reading that Romney had a cheat sheet with him at the debate, which is against the rules. Fighting dirty is apparently a Republican theme, isn't it? We saw it with Sarah and George W. Bush. Romney's in appropriate company.
Today's unemployment number is down below 8%, economy is growing in spite of Congressional Rep. obstruction on the Obama Jobs Bill and the Republican Senate's obstruction of a veteran's job bill. The message from now to November 6 is the reality of where we're at as opposed to the end of Bush's remarkably destructive reign. Mitt wants to repeat those mistakes. Let's not let him.

To clarify, for those who are wondering why we can't just take the two cats up with us, we alreadyRead More have four cats, and a dog. We could only take two of the four cats with us, plus the dog (who is 14yrs. old.) The limit for the rental is three pets... this was a hard decision for us all. We would have taken them all if we could.

Now that Sam has been found, the reason he ran off was due to the sound of gunfire at RooseveltRead More Forest in the early afternoon as his master was getting ready to take him out of his car. All had been quiet, the park was open, so the loud bangs were a surprise - both to Sam and his "Dad". To the best of my knowledge, when the shooting range is used by the Stratford PD, the park is closed to the public. It was that way always and I believe still is. But now, with non-Stratford police personnel using the range, obviously the Park is NOT closed as was observed/heard yesterday at 2 separate time periods of the day. The range is used by at least one other police department. Of course, there could be unauthorized people using the range too. I just don't know. But what I do know that yesterday (Wed), there was shooting early afternoon, and then again around 6PM. I observed at around 5:00PM, a little boy running up the dirt road that leads to the shooting range. The park remained opened all day! The shooting was NOT being done by the Stratford Police. People do not always stick to the trails, and as we all know, children can be quite curious. Who is to say a child and/or adult gets near the berm or behind it and someone shoots over the berm? What goes up, has to come down. I also was told that neighbors say there is shooting going on quite frequently, even on Sundays. I doubt that this is from Stratford PD, because outdoor shooting usually occurs for a week or so, twice a year. Tighter controls must be done! Surely, the parking area can be checked for vehicles... but I observed yesterday people entering the parking area (adjacent to the driveway leading up to the range) on foot, on bicycles, and motorcycles. So people could be in the park even when no vehicles are observed in the lot. Safety is key here! Procedures need to be put in place and perhaps limitations on when other police department(s) can use the range. It is not fair to the surrounding residents to have to hear the bang bang bang on Saturdays and Sundays. It scares some of them, and I know that one person who lives nearby says her dog gets scared right inside their house! What will it take? A child or an adult wandering near the range, thinking it is OK because the Forest is open... and then, all of a sudden, there is shooting and one gets shot, especially a child? This may sound extreme, but children can move quick and suddenly. I think of that little boy running up toward the range. He could have very well traveled through the woods. I can picture bullets being shot over the berm, not on purpose, but it can happen. Or shots go to the left or to the right; and people could be in the same general area - out of sight of the shooters. Bottom Line: The "public" can not be in the park while the range is "live", or in other words, when there is shooting taking place. As how to ensure that the public is not in the park, is not for me to determine. But the Town has to step up to the plate and address this very important issue.

I hope people note how these comments go. Anonymous right-wingers try to change the discussion,Read More prove a point that no one is arguing, and then declare victory. Both "Goodie Bassett" and "Reagan Night" say Ms. Daponte is lying because Tony Smith won't be removed from office. I just re-read Beth's piece to see where she made this claim, but she never said anything of the sort. What she did say was "Both Tony and Linda serve until January 1, 2016." So, where's the "half-truth"? The point of the post is that the new land use District II, comprised of the 3rd & 4th council districts, has no representation on any of these boards. Tony Smith will be the District II Zoning Commissioner, even though he doesn't live in that district. The extreme right can't defend this, so they try to change the subject.

What a wonderful town we live in that the only problem we have worthwhile to discuss is golf cartsRead More driving down the street! WHO CARES? I have kids riding their go carts and mini bikes around our neighborhood. They learn how to fix them and have some fun which doen't include stealing or damaging my property. Actually I enjoy helping them and occasionally lend them a tool or two. The parents make them be considerate by not allowing them to ride around early morning or late evenings. SO WHO CARES! I guess you will want to stop all the people at Oronoque condos from driving across the road up there too? Hey..on the road is on the road. Again, WHO CARES? Get informed and worry about a real problem facing us here in town!
