Rollover, Power Outages Keep Emergency Crews Busy

The ice storm that materialized overnight Tuesday into Wednesday resulted in scattered power outages, accidents, and, of course, no school in Stratford.

More than 800 town residents were without electricity at some point in the day Wednesday in the aftermath of the ice storm Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile, in Stratford today, schools had a 90-minute delay after closing Tuesday and Wednesday due to the severe weather.

The well-predicted storm closed Stratford schools, again, and had officials, business owners and residents  scrambling to protect buildings and property, and there were reports of downed electric and cable wires in several areas of town, officials said.

Mayor John Harkins met with public works and other town officials Wednesday morning shortly after 8:15 to map out measures to clear roofs and protect town buildings from ice dams and possible water damage, among other strategies to ward off the potential ill effects of the storm, which coated the region in a half-inch to an ice of ice.

Meanwhile, police and fire personnel responded to numerous accidents on Wednesday including one rollover requiring the  extradition of two passengers this afternoon at about 4:20 p.m.

An accident at Canaan Road and Light Street involving two cars was reported at and while EMS and fire were dispatching to the scene, first responders were told that passengers were still in the vehicle.

Three units responded to the scene and rescue personnel extricated passengers to safety at about 4:27 p.m., a fire spokesperson reported.

For today, the National Weather Service is predicting cold temperatures near 30 degrees,  with ice reforming over many roadways Thursday night. 

Meanwhile in neighboring Milford, rescue personnel including body sniffing dogs were dispatched to a on Woodmont Road Wednesday morning that slightly injured several people and had as more than two dozen people narrowly escaped injury, some crawling through rubble.

In Stratford and elsewhere on Wednesday, temperatures rose above freezing for much of the day. Shoveling snow off of roofs, especially flat roofs, was the order of the day for many.

Meanwhile, owners and officials are crossing their fingers that the weather does not bring any more heavy accumulation of ice or water soon.
