Obituary: Frederick 'Fred' DiMenna, Age 89

Fred served honorably in the United States Navy during World War II and he crewed the flagship of the naval fleet that supported the invasion of Iwo Jima.

Frederick "Fred" D. DiMenna, age 89 of Stratford the beloved husband of Mary Mamone DiMenna passed away peacefully on November 11, 2012 in Lord Chamberlin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Fred was born on July 22, 1923 in Bridgeport and was the son of the late Daniel and Grace Riccio DiMenna.

Fred served honorably in the United States Navy during World War II and he crewed the flagship of the naval fleet that supported the invasion of Iwo Jima. Fred was employed as an electrician for the Dictaphone Corp. for 36 years and prior to his retirement Fred taught at Bullard-Havens Tech. School for 8 years in their electrical department.

He was a passionate and skilled golfer, and for more than fifty years he played the courses near his home in Stratford. In his later years he maintained his skills to the point where he often shot a score that was lower than his age. He also enjoyed traveling, was obsessed with photography and computers and most of all loved dancing with his wife.

In addition to his beloved wife Mary of 64 years, Fred is also survived by one son Fred DiMenna Jr. and wife Toni of Cape Coral, FL., one daughter Lynn Gelzheisser and husband Robert of Southport, NC., four grandchildren, one great granddaughter and several nieces and nephews. Fred was also predeceased by three brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held on Friday November 16, 2012 at 10 a.m. directly in St. Joseph's of Stratford National Catholic Church 1300 Stratford Road Stratford where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Michael Gitner. Interment will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Galello-Luchansky Funeral Home 2220 Main Street Stratford on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m.. In lieu of flowers, those who so desire may contribute to St. Joseph's of Stratford National Catholic Church 1300 Stratford Road Stratford, Ct. 06615.
