Short Beach Golf Course to Open Friday, March 29

Though severely damaged by Sandy the course is playable.

Friday, March 29, Short Beach Golf Course will open if the weather cooperates.

Though severely damaged by Sandy the course is playable. During this season there will be ongoing repairs and improvements being made to the course.  Except to be using temporary tees and greens.

Just one week prior to Sandy the USGA inspected the course and released its findings which included the increase in maintenance personnel, reducing the number of bunkers, reducing the size of some of the greens and intense maintenance of all greens.

This is the plan which will be used as the guide to not only repairing but improving the entire course.

If you have driven by the course you will notice that many of the pine trees were either pushed down by sanding or have been removed due to salt damage. These trees will be replace with sea grasses and other taller grasses with sand and mulch surrounding them.

The parks department is now in charge of all aspects of course management, which will increase the number of personnel in the maintenance department of the course.

A golf professional with a good teaching background will be hired to open the Short Beach Golf School. First Tee has agreed to return to Short Beach. This is a financial win for the course.

With First Tee, Juniors and Adult lessons being offered by the school a new practice area will be built in back of the soccer field. This area will be free to anyone playing the course and a fee will be charged for anyone wanting to use the area without playing the course that day.

With the new golf season approaching the Short Beach Commission is hoping that repairs and improvements will increase play. An aggressive marketing plan will be put in place in April which will update the public on course conditions and improvements.

By next season we are hoping to have a course Stratford can be proud of.

Future plans include a restaurant on premise with a bar, more leagues and week day tournaments.

The Short Beach Commission have looked at the two hurricanes in two years as a blessing in disguise. Repairs and improvements which should have been made are now being made.

Short Beach Golf Course is coming back and will be a course that is playable for all levels.  It will be a course to be proud of.
