Where is the man of action now?

The Tea Party Republicans have gotten what they wanted: they shut down our government.  

This reckless action affects all of us: parks are closed, services are delayed, and our economy is put at risk. 

We have residents who are federal employees who are not going to work today, who are not able to get paid today, and who are facing grave hardship. 

What is Harkins, our self-described “man of action”, doing today? Is he railing against the actions of some Republican radicals or is he just sipping his tea with his typical mums the word attitude and doing nothing to help the people in our town who will suffer from a shut down?

I haven’t seen anything from him today, but I know what he’s done in the past four years. 

In his final session in the 2009 legislature, the current mayor:

• Voted No to election day registration
• Voted No to providing employment and training funds for disadvantaged workers during the height of the recession and unemployment
• Voted No to emergency contraception for rape victims 

Then, he comes back to Stratford and does the same things as mayor:

• Rammed through redistricting and renaming of our council districts to disenfranchise our voters
• Locked out volunteers at Shakespeare Theatre with no notice
• Paid himself $7500 as an “unvouchered expense account” 

Where’s the oversight for this administration? 

Stratford cannot afford anymore. We need a Town Hall that conducts business on our behalf, with full oversight from our citizens and with the interests of the town at heart.
