What is Life Balance?

Balance

The concept of balance is easy for some to grasp, and not so easy for other high-powered individuals.  One definition for Life Balance is: A state of equilibrium or parity characterized by cancellation of all forces by equal opposing forces.  The key is to bring a sense of harmony into your life, where your work/career arena meshes well with your own personal activities that bring you joy and a sense of peace.  Your Life has many areas that need and require your attention;focusing on doing what gives you pleasure can be a real challenge.

Recharge with activities that are personal to you

No matter how busy you are, making time for friends and family is vital to your emotional and mental health.  Just as you schedule your meetings and errands; don’t forget to pinpoint exact time for activities that provide you with downtime and the ability to recharge your batteries.

Examine your errands

Think about how you can reduce your number of errands, or bundle them into short trips.  Can you obtain help from outside sources? Order in bulk online to minimize tedious trips to the grocery store.  Have things automatically sent by subscribing to some services(Amazon), etc...Barter with friends or family and eliminate time-consuming chores.  Cook and freeze extra food to free up food prep time in the future.

Exercise, exercise, exercise

It is no surprise that exercise is good for your mental, emotional and physical health.  Experts agree that even 10 minute intervals of exercise improve your stamina and general physical well-being. Exercising regularly improves your concentration and gives you more energy to get things done in less time.

Be conscious of time zapping activities at work

Everyone is busy at work.  With companies laying off workers, and doing the same amount of tasks with less people; employees can get stretched too thin. According to a survey conducted by the National Life Insurance Company, four out of ten U.S. employees state that their jobs are "very" or "extremely" stressful.  Those in high-stress jobs are three times more likely than others to suffer from stress-related medical conditions and are twice as likely to quit. The study states that women, in particular, report stress related to the conflict between work and family.

Watch your reactions to life events

*We all experience stress in some form on a daily or at least a consistent basis throughout our year.  What is important is not so much what is happening “to us”, but how we react “to it”.  What coping skills do we need? How do you relax? meditate? If you don’t learn to relax, you won’t make the most of your downtime.  Then, when the next stressful event comes, you may already be overloaded from the last.  Breathe and develop new skills.

Balance is different for everyone.  A skillful coach will determine a unique approach for each client;depending on their age and lifestyle.
