7 Online Resources for Job seekers in 2013

These sites can assist you in landing that dream job 

As a Life Coach, one common thread is, many unemployed/underemployed people are looking for work; or looking to change careers for many reasons.  At some point, we have all searched for a job.  Securing a job involves many factors, but current economic weather might be the most important.  Currently, the United States unemployment rate is 7.6%, down slightly from 7.7% in February and 7.9% in January 2013. 

While many job seekers still utilize a ‘cold call’ approach, and contact potential employers by phone, or person; the norm these days is to scour the internet.  Many job opportunities abound that aren't listed in newspaper or magazine columns.  This is where being a vocational investigator comes into play. 

Here is a list of 7 job sites in no particular order: 

1.      Indeed.com-approximately 50 Million people visit this site each month.  Opportunities from company job boards and company websites are accumulated here in one place.  You can set up specific job alerts for your email inbox.  Several hundred thousand jobs are posted each week.
 
2.      LinkedIn-It is the world’s biggest professional network, with more than 150 million members all over the world.  The site is free and lets you customize a profile that resembles your resume.  Employers have profiles and can post listings to initiate the application process for suitable seekers.

  3.      Careerbuilder.com-This comprehensive site is one of the largest, boasting more than a million jobs posted per month.  Users can create up to 5 resumes, along with cover letters to store for future use.  You can upload your resume and its nifty technology will match it with appropriate jobs.  

4.      Monster.com-Almost 20 years old, Monster filled a niche for those who wanted to look beyond local newspapers for fruitful jobs.  There are over a million jobs to choose from, with tens of millions of resumes posted by users.  You can receive tips on interviewing and salary negotiation; they even have videos to watch to help you polish up your professional image. 

5.      TweetMyJobs.com-Using social networking, this creative site makes it possible for employee and employer to connect across the country.  Your Facebook and Twitter profiles are integrated seamlessly.  You can get updates by email, mobile phone, or Twitter. 

6.      Alljobsearch.com-This site searches websites, newspapers and newsgroups all at once.  This is a no-frills website for the job seeker. 

7.      SimplyHired.com-the interface is rather simple, but you get to search from over 7 million jobs.


When I coach a client, I always ask probing questions to figure out what kind of job or career someone really wants to pursue.  Finding the right fit for your personality, skill set, and education can be tricky.  It just takes some personal reflection and focus to arrive at the answers.
