Orthodox Rabbi Calls for National Mezuzah Protection Law

Rabbi Shmuel Herzfeld of the National Synagogue cited a recent Stratford mezuzah controversy as a reason for Congress to act.

Following the recent controversy in in which from her door post, an Orthodox rabbi has called on Congress to pass a law protecting mezuzahs across the United States.

In a religion blog on the Huffington Post website, Rabbi Shmuel Herzfeld of Ohev Sholom, the National Synagogue in Washington, DC, said Jewish law requires the placement of a mezuzah, a small piece of parchment inscribed with scripture from the Torah, on the doorpost of the home. Herzfeld said that prohibiting the placement of a mezuzah might be a way of keeping out Orthodox Jews.

Even though the condominium association backed down and , and other states have passed such laws, Herzfeld said a national law is needed rather than a state-by-state approach.
