Caruso Might Give Gomes an Edge in 23rd Senate Primary
The 3-way primary shaping up for the state senate district, which is partly in Stratford, grows more interesting by the day.
The three-way , which is mostly in Bridgeport but partly in , might become more interesting thanks to the influence of a fourth political figure.
According to Lennie Grimaldi’s Only In Bridgeport blog, former state Rep. Chris Caruso was contemplating a run for the Democratic Party nomination if incumbent Sen. Edwin Gomes, D-Bridgeport, decided not to run again.
But on Monday, former Sen. Ernest Newton II, who lost the seat in 2005 when he went to prison on a bribery charge, won the party endorsement in a surprise victory at the party’s district convention, besting Gomes, who also has key labor union support, and state Sen. Andres Ayala, D-Bridgeport, who is backed by Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch.

Grimaldi reports that Caruso’s supporters say he will probably back Gomes behind the scenes, which is a big plus for the beleaguered incumbent.
