Festival! Stratford Sneak Peek: SquareWrights

Part three of the 8-part story series previewing the upcoming arts festival puts the spotlight on a local theatre group called SquareWrights. Festival executive producer Jeffrey Lapham tells us more.

SquareWrights

Since its inception in 2004, SquareWrights playwright center, which is Stratford-based, has presented staged readings and productions of more than 100 new plays written by its members.

Plays nurtured at SquareWrights have gone on to full productions in Georgia, North Carolina, California, New York City, Massachusetts and even Alaska. Playwrights have entered scripts developed through SquareWrights into competitions and festivals around the country -- and won.

The group was founded by Orna Rawls and J. Sibley Law, both playwrights, who sought to build a community of playwrights focused on developing their works for the stage. The group has provided fundraisers for other organizations over the years, raising more than $10,000 for the arts and relief efforts around the world.

Three years ago, SquareWrights moved their night of original one acts, Quickies In the Stacks (usually presented at the Stratford Public Library) into the park for Festival! Stratford. We’re glad they're here and look forward to another fun night of original Quickies in the Park by their talented authors, performed and directed by members of the rich local theatre talent of the Stratford area arts community.

SquareWrights can be seen performing Quickies in the Park on Friday, Aug. 12, at 8 p.m. and on Satuday, Aug. 20, at 2 p.m.
