Hoydick Tapped to Serve on Task Force on Collection of Overdue Child Support Payments

HARTFORD - State Representative Laura Hoydick (R-120) has been appointed to the Task Force to Study Collection of Past Due Child Support as part of an effort to increase the collection of child support payments that are owed by delinquents.

The issue is one of importance to Rep. Hoydick as she introduced HB 6678, An Act Concerning the Service of Capias Mittimus in a Child Support Order, during the most recent legislative session. That bill aimed to increase the collection of past due child support payments.

“This Task Force is a step in the right direction as we seek to enhance efforts to collect past due child support so that disadvantaged children receive the assistance that they desperately need,” said Rep. Hoydick. “This issue is critically important to families in our community, and I thank Republican Leader Cafero for this opportunity to serve.”

There are approximately 4,000 outstanding warrants that add up to an estimated $98 million in child support debt.  Improved collection of past due child support payments will be able to assist children that have been deemed entitled to the funds.

“The amount of uncollected child support in this state is staggering,” said Hoydick.  “The damage that these so-called ‘deadbeats’ do to their children by failing to provide for them is tragic and irresponsible.  This task force will aim at helping law enforcement catch those who evade their responsibilities as parents, and to improve the ability of the state to ensure close the gap on child support debt owed to the parents caring for children.”

Rep. Hoydick also serves on the Legislature’s Committee on Children, which is the likely committee of cognizance over the work produced by the Task Force.  She expressed her desire to continue working on the subject through that committee once the Task Force completes its work.
