After DTC Snub, Stratford Councilman Fights for Primary

Jason Santi is working to force a party primary after losing the Democratic endorsement last week.

Last week the Stratford Democratic Town Committee (DTC) endorsed a newcomer over current Fourth District Councilman Jason Santi, seemingly because of the way the incumbent has voted with Republicans since being elected to the Town Council.

DTC member Peggy Barnish was in the minority to vote for Santi. She said she was voting for Santi even though some fellow Democrats might be “irritated” by some of his votes.

Andre Ely was the beneficiary of that sentiment, winning the endorsement for the Fourth District.

“I am disappointed that our current Fourth District councilman voted with Republicans to close a voting location in my neighborhood, making it harder and more confusing for people to vote,” Ely, a retired United Illuminating employee, said in a prepared statement.

He continued, “Unlike our current Fourth District councilman, I am a proud Democrat who will stand up for working families and progressive values and will legislate by our party’s ideals.”

Santi is now working to force a party primary against Ely.

In an email to Stratford Patch Monday, Santi said he’s secured 90 signatures that Democratic Registrar of Voters Rick Marcone “is currently going over.” The required minimum to force a party primary, according to Santi, is 61.

“I want the people of my district to decide who is the best choice to serve them,” Santi said. “I have always fought hard for my district. I want to continue to do so.”
