Pet Rabbit Saved from Johnson Avenue House Fire

The residents were not home at the time; two house cats have not been found.

rescued a pet rabbit while fighting a fire Saturday afternoon at 275 Johnson Ave.

Assistant Chief John Conway said the fire started in the basement and burned through the first floor by the time the first firefighters arrived.

Neighbors reported the blaze at 1:16 p.m. when they noticed heavy smoke coming from the structure. Conway said the first units found heavy fire in the living room area. They extinguished the fire and vented the smoke.

He said no one was home when the fire started. A ladder truck and fire engine companies responded, and the Milford Fire Department provided mutual aid fire protection for a short time. The cause of the Johnson Avenue fire is under investigation by the fire marshal's office.

A neighbor took in the rabbit. Neighbors told firefighters that the house also contained two cats, but Conway said the felines could not be found.
