Seatbelt Checkpoints to Start in Stratford May 21

Be prepared to be handed a citation if you don't buckle up.

Driving around town starting May 21 you may notice some stationary police checkpoints popping up here and there. As Memorial Day nears, the Stratford Police Department will begin a campaign focused on seatbelt safety. If you choose not to click it, you will get a ticket. According to figures released by the police department, 13 to 15-year-old passengers have the highest percentage (67 percent) of all age groups to be fatally injured and unrestrained in traffic crashes. Among adult passengers 18 to 34 years old who were killed in car crashes, 63 percent were not wearing a seatbelt, according to the department.

Are Pedestrians Safe in Stratford?

Seven reports this year of pedestrians being struck by vehicles in Stratford is only three instances shy of the total for all of 2011. As a pedestrian in Stratford, do you feel safe walking these streets?

Eleven days ago a Shelton man was killed when he was struck by a minivan as he attempted to cross Barnum Avenue near Main Street. The accident marked the seventh time in 2012 in which a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle in Stratford, according to figures gathered by Lt. Frank Eannotti. In all of 2011, there were 10 similar reports. Eannotti said the accidents are happening on or near Main Street in areas where foot traffic is highest -- Paradise Green, Stratford Center and Hard's Corner. And though the majority of pedestrians only suffer minor injuries and are usually able to walk away, Eannotti said it's important people know the rules of the road in order to prevent tragedy. "I think there's some confusion," he said. "Sometimes …

That intersection at the railroad is way out of compliance with state DOT regulations governing intersections and sight-line distances. I have a scaled drawing of the area as well as the DOT regs from many years ago when I was fighting a ticket. If they wanted to build that now they wouldn't be allowed to. There shouldn't be a crosswalk there it's too dangerous. It needs to be up the hill a bit …   more ›

Arrest information is provided by the Stratford Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

A 25-year-old Stratford man was arrested over the weekend for allegedly plowing into a neighbor's porch then fleeing the scene. According to the arrest report, the homeowner was awakened by the sound of the collision -- which he called "an explosion" -- and after he told Cawthra to stay put, the male operator reversed his vehicle and sped off southbound on Nichols Avenue. Police reportedly caught up with Cawthra at the intersection of Wells Place and Main Street, where residents had called in complaints about a parked car with heavy front-end damage and its airbags…

911 Tapes: Welcome to the Dark Side

Do news organizations that publish 911 call audio help or harm the communities they serve?

The initial shockwave that swept through Fairfield County last week after the Ramsey family tragedy changed to disgust following the decision of area news outlets to publish the graphic 911 recording, during which a woman police identified as Mrs. Ramsey told the dispatcher that her husband was lying dead "in a pool of blood." Patch received access to the tape but did not publish a link to it. As an American writer who considers the First Amendment our most cherished right, I believe that making 911 tapes available to the public is essential to community safety; however, are we not also human beings? Did the tape need to be released so soon after Mr. Ramsey's tragic demise? And how -- if at all -- did the tape's release advance the public'…

I feel for the wife in this scenario. She called 911 in an emergency not thinking that her voice would be blasted from every radio and news podcast. It was a personal, horrifying moment where she lost everything. Her tragedy became so personally public so quickly, not for the crime, but for her phone call for help. Clearly the crime would rn her privacy, but let's focus on the crime first, shall …   more ›
