Home Sales in Connecticut Increase in April

RE/MAX of New England reported a 3.8 percent increase, according to the Norwich Bulletin.

RE/MAX of New England reported this week that the number of homes in Connecticut sold during the month of April increased by 3.8 percent compared to the same last year, according to the Norwich Bulletin. Last month, 2,461 homes were sold, up from 2,371 last year. The median sale price, however, decreased by 0.4 percent and as well as inventory -- from 31,883 to 28,133. Out of the six states in New England, New Hampshire saw the largest increase in sales at 20.2 percent, while Rhode Island showed the largest decline in prices at 5.8 percent. Massachusetts and Maine, in fact, were the only states that didn't see their home sale prices fall.

McMahon Wins GOP Senate Nod, But Shays to Run Primary Challenge

Decker, Formica, Winsley, Obsitnik and Roraback win party endorsements for congressional races.

Linda McMahon won the Republican nomination Friday to run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman, but it looks like there will be a primary for the party’s nod just as there will be in the Democratic Party. The Connecticut Post reported that McMahon, the wealthy chief executive for World Wrestling Entertainment, won the nomination on the first ballot at the party convention in Hartford, but that former 4th District congressman Christopher Shays qualified to challenge her in a primary on Aug. 14. Democrats will also vote on Aug. 14 in a primary between 5th District congressman Chris Murphy, who received the party endorsement on May 12, and former Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz.   Congressional races The …

Bridgeport Democrats Expected to Fight for 23rd Senate District Nod

The seat now held by state Sen. Edwin Gomes represents a portion of Stratford.

A three-way Democratic Party contest is possible among Bridgeport politicians over the state senate’s 23rd District seat, which is currently held by incumbent Sen. Edwin Gomes, D-Bridgeport, and also represents a portion of Stratford. The Connecticut Post reported that state Rep. Andres Ayala, Jr., D-Bridgeport, and former state Sen. Ernest Newton II are planning to challenge Gomes for the party nomination. The seat is controlled by Bridgeport Democrats, so winning the nomination is tantamount to winning the election. Only a relatively small part of the district is in Stratford, but it could be a factor in a tight contest. Newton lost the seat when he was convicted in 2006 on a corruption charge, and Gomes then won it in a special election…

McCoy's Pub Wins Readers' Choice Best Burger in Stratford

The Stratford Center restaurant and bar wins this week's Readers' Choice contest.

McCoy's Pub beat out Hannah's Kitchen and Danny's Drive-In, among others, to win this week's Readers' Choice contest that asked residents who has the tastiest burger in Stratford. McCoy's grabbed a third of the vote -- 106 of 306 -- and received only one positive comment less than Hannah's, whose supporters were equally as devoted as McCoy's. Here's what one reader had to say about the Irish eatery: Susan: I am partial to McCoy's burgers! Always made with the best and freshiest ingredients. Glenn and the chef never cut corners when it comes to the best food for their valued customers. Actually, everything on their menu is delicious. Though this week's contest is over, you can still review past winners of Stratford Patch's Readers' Choice …

Stratford SportsBeat: My 6:37 A.M. Tee Time

A special tribute to my father who passed away four years ago.

[Note: Want your photos and/or write-ups from Stratford youth or recreational sports featured on Stratford Patch? Here's how!] Ever since my father died, I don't play golf very much anymore. In fact, I only play once a year and when I do, I take just one swing and call it a day. One swing is all I need to put a smile on my face and go home. No mulligans, no excuses, no do-overs. On May 17, I hit one ball to honor my father who died on this day, and I do it early. Patrick J. Devlin passed away at 6:37 a.m on May 17, 2008. On the anniversary of his passing, I get up well before dawn and drive to the Westchester Country Club in Harrison, New York. I make sure I allow for enough time for traffic, bad weather, and other unpredictable things, …

Stratford Eye on the Beltway: Lieberman Praises Postal Decision

And, Himes applauds House passage of Mobile Workforce State Income Tax Simplification Act.

LIEBERMAN: The senator released a statement Thursday in response to the U.S. Postal Service's decision to delay closing mail processing plants until 2013. “I appreciate that the Postal Service is moving forward with its downsizing in a way that is consistent with the Senate-passed 21st Century Postal Service Act," he said. "The PMG assures us that no mail processing centers will be closed this year, which means the House still has time to pass a bill so it can be reconciled with the Senate-passed bill." HIMES: The congressman applauded on Wednesday the House passage of legislation that will reduce income tax and reporting burdens for Connecticut residents who occasionally commute to other states. The Mobile Workforce State Income Tax …
