Thanks, Irene Shelter Volunteers
The Stratford Health Department and Stratford Community Services thanks Stratford-Trumbull-Monroe Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) for helping the roughly 60 residents who used the shelter.

On behalf of the Stratford Health Department and Stratford Community Services, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Stratford-Trumbull-Monroe Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) volunteers who served at the Town of Stratford shelter at Bunnell High School during Tropical Storm Irene.
These volunteers assisted with all facets of the shelter to ensure that residents were comfortable and the event ran smoothly. They helped to set up the shelter, register families, feed the residents and tend to their physical and emotional needs.

The shelter was open for almost two days and served approximately 60 residents. Volunteer nurses stayed over night to make sure that these families could receive nursing support, if needed. Other volunteers contacted residents who were registered in the Town's Special Needs Registry to make sure they were safe.
After the shelter was closed, more MRC volunteers passed out ice and water at the Oronoque Fire Station to residents still without power. In addition to their support during and after Irene, MRC volunteers will also staff our seasonal flu clinic and health fair on 10/1 at the Birdseye Municipal Complex, as well as two additional flu clinics on 10/5 at the Baldwin Center and 10/12 at the Birdseye Complex.

The Stratford-Trumbull-Monroe MRC is a group of medical and non-medical volunteers who are dedicated to protecting and improving the public health of all three communities. Volunteers train to respond to public health emergencies, participate in events like health fairs and flu clinics, and share health and emergency preparedness information.
