STRATFORD – The Wayne’s Walk Foundation, a Stratford based nonprofit organization, will hold their fourth annual Wayne’s Walk 5K Walk on Saturday, June 21, 2014.

This fundraiser event honors Stratford native Wayne Nicholas Lecardo, who was killed by a teen drunk driver in 2007 while on his way home from his job at Foxwoods Resort Casino, two days before his 34th birthday.

Wayne, his coworker, and the teen were all killed in the crash. On the night before his funeral shortly after leaving Wayne’s home, three of Wayne’s close friends were nearly killed when their vehicle was rear-ended by another drunk driver.

The entrance to “Wayne’s Walk” is located on Riverdale Drive where, as a child, Wayne would clean and maintain the pathway leading to Long Island Sound and Short Beach.

Since the official dedication of “Wayne’s Walk” in June of 2011, the foundation has hosted an annual Wayne’s Walk 5K along the shoreline of Stratford.

Each year just prior to the event, the local Stratford Home Depot assists the organization by donating landscaping materials and a team of volunteers to help the organization clean and beautify the park and memorial stone at Wayne’s Walk.

The Wayne’s Walk Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) public charity. Their mission is to raise awareness of the dangers of drinking and driving, to support activities and educational programs that inform the public about the impact of drinking and driving, and to financially support victims and families of drunk driving crashes.

The foundation has established a Victim Assistance Fund where drunk driving victims can apply for financial assistance.

To date, the organization has committed more than $15,000.00 to needy victims of drunk driving crashes, and has donated a portion of donations received to support programs offered by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) within the State of Connecticut.

They are the only nonprofit organization in the State of CT with a fund to help drunk driving victims.

Registration for the event begins at 9:00 am and a welcome ceremony will take place at 9:30am, followed immediately by the 5K Walk. Several local, state, and federal officials have been invited to the event. A beach celebration will take place after the walk with food, music, a silent auction, and family friendly activities.
