July 4 - A Time to Reflect

Members of the Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) wish to remind everyone that July 4 is both a time to celebrate our freedoms but also a time to reflect on those who sacrificed their lives and fortunes so that we can be free.  Only 11 years elapsed from the Declaration of Independence (July 4, 1776) to the signing of the US Constitution (Sept 17, 1787).  These 11 years changed the world.  Our Patriots made it happen by enlisting and volunteering to serve their country.

Many local militia were part of the Ripton Parish Militia and guarded the coast or participated in the Alarms of 1777 and 1779 when the British invaded New Haven, burnt Fairfield, Norwalk and Danbury.  Our Veterans continue to give of themselves selflessly so that we can enjoy our Fourth of July.

The DAR perpetuates the memory and spirit of the men and women who won American independence.  The group also helps maintain historic state properties.  Any woman over 18 who can prove an ancestor served in the American Revolution is a prospective member.  For more information on the DAR visit http://www.sarahriggshumphreysDAR.org.
