Staples Loses Class L Boys Volleyball Crown to Cheshire [Video]

Wreckers outplayed by undefeated Rams 3-1 in finals.

What do you get when you have a great crowd, great enthusiasm and great matches?

Answer: a great state final.

Unfortunately for the Staples boys volleyball team, however, it was a better night for undefeated Cheshire, which beat the Wreckers in four games Friday night at Fairfield Warde to claim the CIAC Class L state title.

Having avenged its loss to Southington in last year's final in the semifinal earlier this week,  Staples (18-5) was hoping to win its ninth state title in 11 years.

Things started well for the Wreckers, who broke from a 6-6 tie in the first game by winning six straight points and cruising to a 25-12 victory.

It was obvious that Cheshire (22-0) was experiencing some nerves after reaching the championship for the first time in school history.

The Rams settled down in the second set, gained their composure and closed out the game, 25-23.

With momentum clearly on their side, they kept their foot on the gas, taking the third game 26-24.

The forth and final game was a seesaw battle with four lead changes.

Staples was up 22-21 when Cheshire's 6-10 junior Nat Howard got to the service line. The Rams ran off four straight points to close out the game and take home the state title.

The Rams were lead by Nate Howards (19 kills) and Joe Bahgats (18 kills and 10 digs).

Danny Fishman had 52 assists for the Wreckers, who were appearing in a state final for the 11th consecutive year.

Jonah Aelyon finished with 17 kills for the Wreckers while Drew Appleman and Andrea Bub contributed 14 and 13 kills, respectively.

The Wreckers completed their first season under Jon Shepro, who took over after Bruce Bretts retired. Betts was on the bench for all eight of Staples' eight state championships.

first-game win, senior Danny Fishman (52 assists, two blocks, two digs) deftly set up classmates Andreas Bub (13 kills, three blocks), Drew Appleman (14 kills, one hustle play) and A.J. Green (six kills, one dig) along with junior Jonah Aelyon (17 kills, one block, two digs, one hustle play) for the Wreckers
