New Milford Bests Darien in Babe Ruth Finals [Video]

New Milford won the 13-year-old state title with a 6-1 win over Darien.

Joe Marzano, the coach of the Darien 13-year-old Babe Ruth team, said earlier in the week that it would be tough to beat his squad twice — but New Milford managed to do just that.

For the second time in as many nights, missed opportunities were the story for Darien, which suffered a 6-1 defeat to New Milford at Ridgefield's Ciuccoli Field.

New Milford claimed the state title followed its second straight win over Darien, which actually out-hit its opponents 18-14 in the two games.

But Darien, which won the town's first district crown since 1969, stranded 24 runners in the two contests, including 15 in Thursday's 5-2 defeat.

On the flip side, New Milford capitalized on a number of mistakes Darien made in the second inning Friday. Three times it stole bases with runners on first and third, resulting in five runs in the frame.

The aggressive baserunning allowed New Milford to get runners in scoring position in the inning three times. It scored two runs on wild pitches, two on singles and one on a fielder's choice to go up 5-1 after two.

Still,  Darien came out strong in the top of the first as Andrew Enzor led off with a single and scored one out later on Jamie Schofield’s RBI double.

Darien looked like the team that had scored 25 runs in its first two state tournament games, but that was the extent of the offense on Friday.

New Milford played with heavy hearts after an adopted son of one of the team's coaches passed away and used the tragedy as motivation.
