Bridgeport Bluefish Edge Stratford Brakettes in 'Battle of the Sexes'

3,927 come out to see unique exhibition game at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard.

After rain put a halt to the "Battle of the Sexes" exhibition game between the Bridgeport Bluefish and Stratford Brakettes last Monday, the result turned out to be well worth the wait for the 3,927 in attendance Sunday night at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard.

The Bluefish edged the Brakettes 2-1 in a walkoff victory after Joe Bateman scored on a ball that was misplayed in the outfield.

The experience was just as important to the players as the final score.

"There was nothing better than me standing in center field and seeing the entire crowd like that," veteran Brakettes outfielder Denise Denis told the Connecticut Post. "It was just a great atmosphere to play in."

Bluefish pitcher Matt Iannazzo, who played the outfield in the game, told the New Haven Register, "It was a good experience. Any time you have two competitive teams kind of going at it, in whatever, it's going to be fun. Not only that, you have the whole atmosphere out here — it was all Brakettes fans, it seemed — but it was a lot of fun."

The exhibition was arranged for this year only, but based on the results, there is a good chance it will happen again.

Brakettes general manager Bob Baird gave a literal thumbs-up to the Connecticut Post on the thought of doing it again.

"It was definitely great. These (Bluefish) guys were great," Baird told the Post. "You can't beat this."
