Name: Olivia Donnelly
School: David Wooster Middle School (2011-2012); Wilcoxson Elementary (2004-2011)
Accomplishments: Olivia maintains an excellent GPA which saw her achieving “advanced” grades on the CMTs and receiving a Presidential Award. About this reward, Olivia said, “I was so surprised. I had no idea that I was going to receive it or that I had even met the qualifications for the award.”
At school, Olivia is an active member of the percussion section of the band. She has played bells, base drum, snare drum, maracas, crash cymbal and suspended cymbal. Twice a year the band holds a performance for family, friends and the public. This year they performed at Paradise Green in June. She enjoys playing different instruments in different songs and has been the first chair of percussionists.
Olivia said her favorite instrument is the snare drum and that she looks forward to meeting and making more friends as she moves on to the Wooster Middle School band.
Olivia has also been a member of the Wilcoxson School chorus for the past two years. Like the band, the chorus also performs various songs twice a year at school.
Having performed in three school plays while at Wilcoxson, Olivia still hears younger children say, “Hey, it’s the white rabbit,” whenever they recognize her. She was the White Rabbit in "Alice in Wonderland," in addition to playing an Oompa Loompa in "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," and an orphan named Tessie in "Annie Jr.".
Olivia has proven herself to be a natural leader. As a member of Wilcoxson’s safety patrol, she went through a very formal application process for the position and then had to perform many school duties reserved only for the sixth graders.
“My favorite was setting up the cones in the driveway in the morning and afternoon," said Olivia of her time on patrol. "Sometimes we had to use walkie-talkies as well.”
On the sports field, Olivia is just as active.
As a forward or guard, she plays basketball for the Stratford recreation department’s Liberty team. This year they only lost one game.
"[I enjoy] the excitement and that basketball is a fast-moving game," said Olivia. "I love hearing the people cheering on the sidelines.”
In softball, she plays second base for the Pirates of the Stratford Little League. This year her team only lost three games out of the more than 15 games played. In 2009, Olivia was nominated for the prestigious Erin Babinau award, which is given to a team member for showing excellent character and sportsmanship.
As an active member of the Indian Princess’ Mighty Kickapoo Nation, Olivia received the Thunderbird Award. She enjoys participating in this activity as her dad was the chief of her tribe last year, and she gets to spend time with her friends as well as meet new people.
During her free time, Olivia enjoys riding her bicycle, cooking, reading, spending time with her friends and family. She is a New York Yankees fan and enjoys watching their matches and follows them closely.
Key to Awesomeness: Olivia knows that working hard will reap good results. She also believes that a person should always do the right thing, no matter how hard it is. Olivia said her family members are an example of this. They work hard for what they want, and she tries to do her best to follow in their footsteps.
