Name: Matthew Fazekas
Age: 18
School: Bunnell High School
Accomplishments: Matthew recently graduated with high honors from Bunnell High School.
Having completed the highest level of mathematics offered by Bunnell High School in his junior year, Matthew completed Calculus BC remotely. Sitting in the conference room at the Stratford Library, Matthew used a two-way camera to "attend" Mr. Zeffiro's math class at Stratford High School.
"It was an interesting experience and I felt as if I was in the classroom," said Matthew of his time in the virtual classroom.
Last year, Matt was awarded the Aspiring Math/Science Teacher Award by 2011 Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Kristen Record.
In his senior year, Matthew was the captain of his varsity tennis team. He has honed his game over the years and his speciality is doubles.
He also works five days a week at Walgreens in Milford.
Matthew was a volunteer member of BuildOn, a local organization that offers volunteer opportunities to students in the area. He has also volunteered at the Stratford Animal Shelter's Dog Walk, which takes place at the Paradise Green Park.
In his freshman and sophomore years, Matthew volunteered as a camp counselor at Funworks, a five-week long camp in Stratford for children of elementary school age and younger. He was a member of the visual images and video production team which was responsible for compiling the end-of-camp video presentation.
Having attained a perfect score in the SAT math section, Matthew hopes to one day be a high school mathematics teacher. He will begin to pursue this goal at Quinnipiac University -- where he received a partial scholarship -- in the upcoming fall.
Key to Awesomeness: Matthew is self-motivated. By nature, he has always worked hard and generally tries to help people.
