Stratford Students Make the Grade: May 23

From graduating seniors to science awards, Stratford natives are active at university.

These students may have moved on to school outside of Stratford, but they are still making their hometown proud by making the grade.

Kellie Hayden, of Stratford, Conn., has become a member of Lambda Pi Eta (LPH), the National Communication Association's official honor society at Marist College.

Hayden, a Marist College Senior, joins a worldwide network of active LPH chapters at four-year colleges and universities. Lambda Pi Eta recognizes, fosters, and rewards outstanding scholastic achievement while stimulating interest in the communication discipline. Students must maintain a high grade point average and demonstrate campus involvement to qualify for a nomination.

Following students is are two of the 71 students recently inducted into the University of New Haven's Honor Society for Experiential Education.

Alesha Vontaesha Chu Foo of Stratford, Conn.

The students were inducted by completing two of the following experiences: a faculty-mentored research project, an internship, an academic service learning project or a study abroad excursion. A student must also be ranked in the top 20 percent of his or her class.

Saturday, May 5, Keene State College's Commencement honored its biggest-ever graduating class. A total of 1,196 degrees were awarded to 1,107 students.

This year's graduates included the following local students:

Kelsey Francis of Stratford, Conn., was recently inducted into the Upsilon Omicron chapter of Tri Beta, National Biological Honor Society, during a recent campus ceremony at Quinnipiac University.

Aadit K. Patel of Stratford, Conn., received a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from Clarkson University on May 12, 2012.

Clarkson University launches leaders into the global economy. One in five alumni already leads as a CEO, VP or equivalent senior executive of a company.

Margaret Frattaroli, a senior at Connecticut College, was awarded the American Studies Prize, which is given to the American studies senior major whose written or artistic work best incorporates the interdisciplinary methods and perspectives sought in American studies.

Sarah Calgreen of Stratford, Conn., was one of more than 60 students recognized for academic achievement recently at American International College.

Calgreen, a senior majoring in Criminal Justice, received the Outstanding Performance in Criminal Justice Award.

Ten math majors at Eastern Connecticut State University were inducted into the Kappa Mu Epsilon honor society on April 21. The society recognizes students who have a 3.0 GPA, a grade of B or better in each the Abstract Algebra and Real Analysis I courses, at least a B+ average in higher level mathematics courses, and junior or senior class standing.

Sarah Joy '12 of Stratford, Conn., was one of the inductees.

The School of Arts and Sciences at Eastern Connecticut State University recently held the 11th Annual Student Research Conference and Exhibition. The event featured research projects in the form of oral, poster, performance, and art presentations.

Babatunde Olatinwo '12 of Stratford, Conn., participated in the event. Olatinwo's poster presentation was titled "Re-Introduction of Nitrogen Changes Cytoplasmic Proteins and Halts Sexual Reproduction in Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii Gametes."

Olatinwo is majoring in Biology.

Michael Proudfoot '12 of Stratford, Conn., participated in the event. Proudfoot's oral presentation was titled "Schooling Patterns of Atlantic Bluefin Tuna."

Proudfoot is majoring in Computer Science.

Nicole Romeo '14 of Stratford, Conn., participated in the event. Romeo presented two art projects, "Chaos" and "Self Portrait." Both were presented as monotype prints. Romeo is majoring in Visual Arts.

Eastern Connecticut State University's 122nd Commencement took place at the XL Center in Hartford on May 15. In all, 1,230 undergraduates and 88 graduate students earned their degrees.

Xiaoman Zhang of Stratford, Conn., graduated with a master's degree in Secondary Education.

Priscilla Alicea of Stratford, Conn., graduated with a degree in Mathematics .

Kathryn Harry of Stratford, Conn., graduated cum laude with a degree in Mathematics and Elementary Education.

Sarah Joy of Stratford, Conn., graduated with a degree in Mathematics.

Babatunde Olatinwo of Stratford, Conn., graduated with a degree in Biology.

Michael Proudfoot of Stratford, Conn., graduated with a degree in Computer Science.

Eric Rutter of Stratford, Conn., graduated with a degree in Sociology and Applied Social Relations.

Joelle Schrock of Stratford, Conn., graduated cum laude with a degree in Communication.

Shannon Walters of Stratford, Conn., graduated magna cum laude with a degree in English.
