BOE to Appoint New Superintendent Tonight

The special meeting where Newtown Supt. Janet Robinson is expected to accept the Stratford job will take place at Stratford Academy-Johnson House, 719 Birdseye St., at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

It's been a long time coming but tonight a new Stratford superintendent will be appointed at a special meeting at Stratford Academy-Johnson House slated to begin at 7:30 p.m.

Newtown Supt. Janet Robinson is expected to accept the school board's formal offer more than a year after the position became open when the announcement surfaced that former Supt. Irene Cornish would be retiring at the end of 2012.

"This process took place last fall, and I felt that the Board of Education in Stratford was really interested in students' success," Robinson told Patch on Monday. "I thought the kind of things we've done for success in Newtown would work in Stratford."

Pending the official appointment, Robinson is scheduled to start July 1. Until then, Interim Supt. Margaret Lasek will remain as head of Stratford schools.

A Superintendent Search Committee recommended Robinson to the Stratford Board of Education before the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook on Dec. 14, but the school board decided to postpone the announcement.

"We held off for many reasons, sensitivity being the key one," said Board of Education Chairman Gavin Forrester.

Tonight's meeting will be held in the auditorium of the school and is open to the public.
