Stratford 2013-14 School Bus Routes; Message from Superintendent

The first day of school is Wednesday, Aug. 28.

Above you'll find a downloadable PDF of the 2013-14 school bus routes in Stratford. Below is a message from Superintendent Janet Robinson, taken from the school board's website.

People are typically surprised to hear that I am working over the summer. They believe that if school is not in session, then everything must be shut down. Just the opposite, summers are incredibly busy in school districts, not just with summer school, but this is valuable time to bring in people to write curriculum, conduct needed training, deal with any unresolved issues, and planning for next year.

Starting as the new superintendent in Stratford on July 1 has made this a particularly busy and exciting summer as I am learning all I can about our schools and our people who dedicate themselves to working with children.

The entire administrative team spent nine days in training for the new teacher and administrator evaluation plans that are being implemented this year in Connecticut. This was intensive but it was an opportunity for me to work alongside the Stratford Leadership team and become acquainted with each one. The Stratford Schools have a good reputation throughout the state of Connecticut, and I can see why when I see the quality of the caring educators who work with the Stratford children.

When I visit classrooms, students usually have no idea what the superintendent does. When they hear that I decide on closing schools for a snow day, then they get excited. Well, my job as superintendent is more than calling snow days. We have a highly complex organization of 13 schools, transportation, hiring and retaining effective staff, developing and managing a budget, complying with federal and state mandates, insuring rigorous standards in curriculum and instruction, just to name a few of our responsibilities.

My goals as your superintendent of schools include continuing the work that has gone on in the past to provide excellent education, and build on that to continually improve. It is important that every child in Stratford have the experience of a high quality curriculum taught by a high quality teacher. That includes preparing them with the skills that enable them to enter college or the work world when they graduate. We want our students to be good problem solvers and understand their responsibilities as citizens in a global society.

To accomplish all that we need to, our Senior Leadership Team of school administrators will be frequently in classrooms to ensure that teachers are supported in their efforts to provide high quality instruction. We are all a community of learners and as educators, we will always be learning how to accomplish our mission even better.

As we look to our new school year beginning, I wish to thank this community for the invitation to work with this district and for the wonderful welcome I have received thus far.
