Poll: Should Stratford Hold School on Veterans Day?

Like most area districts, Stratford closes schools on the holiday. Do you agree with that tradition?

Stratford joins most area school dictricts in observing Veterans Day with a day off from school.

"It's always been that way, even back when I was in school," said Stratford Board of Education Vice Chairman Charles Lindberg, who graduated from Stratford High in 1982.

Lindberg has served on the school board for two years, but he has also been president of several PTAs for the schools his children attended. He said he can't remember any discussion about whether to hold school on the holiday.

Unlike Memorial Day, which is a remembrance of the nation’s war dead, Veterans Day honors all veterans who served during peacetime and war.

A review of school calendars for districts in the region show that only Trumbull and Shelton will have school on Friday, Nov. 11. Stratford, Milford, Fairfield, Bridgeport, Orange and New Haven will close their schools for the holiday.

School officials in districts that have school on Veterans Day say they use the class time to educate students about the contribution veterans have made and the importance of the holiday.
