Poll: Should Stratford's Mayor Get a Pay Raise?

The talk about town is that the mayor is underpaid compared to elected leaders of similar-sized towns and cities in the area. Do you think the position deserves a raise? Vote in our poll.

Town officials are mulling over a proposal to increase the mayor's salary by $25,000.

The motion is currently in the ordinance committee -- a group comprised of all Town Council members -- and would bump the annual salary of the next elected head of Stratford to $115,000, Councilman (D-6) told Patch via email.

"The justification is that the Stratford mayor is at the lower end of the mayoral/first selectman salaries of towns of similar size," said Fuller, adding that he is opposed to the roughly 28 percent raise.

The mayor of Milford, a municipality of almost identical population, will rake in $93,506 this year, according to figures from the city's 2011-12 budget. And according to Fairfield's budget, that town's first selectman made $127,020 last year.

Currently, with a $90,000 annual salary, Mayor John A. Harkins is making less than the town's human resources director, the public works director, the town engineer and the deputy chief fire marshal, among other town employees, according to the town's 2011-12 budget (see attached PDF).
