Family of Victoria Soto, Other Newtown Victims Pen Letter Urging Gun Reform

'In the midst of our anguish we have learned about the dangerous loopholes in our nation’s gun laws and we are compelled to speak out to save others from suffering what we have endured,' reads a portion of the letter.

Thirty-two family members of victims of the Sandy Hook tragedy -- including 20 family members of slain Newtown teacher and Stratford native Victoria Soto -- sent a letter to members of the Senate Judiciary Committee Tuesday as they resumed their markup of gun bills.

The family members called on Congress to require background checks on all gun sales, limit military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines and make gun trafficking a federal crime.

The full letter follows, and also is attached as a PDF in the gallery right.

--

Dear Chairman Leahy and Senators Grassley, Blumenthal, and Murphy:

We are 32 family members of victims who were killed in the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012 – innocent children and their educators responsibly going about their day.

No one can describe our pain and the brutal day-to-day emotions we suffer. No one can bring our loved ones back and no one from our community of Newtown, Connecticut will ever go back to “normal.”

In the midst of our anguish we have learned about the dangerous loopholes in our nation’s gun laws and we are compelled to speak out to save others from suffering what we have endured. We are writing today to express our deep conviction and support for the President’s plan to reduce gun violence in America.

Specifically we are asking members of Congress to:

1. Require a criminal background check for every gun sold in America that includes a review of all disqualifying records and meaningful record keeping for all sales – in the same manner that Federally licensed dealers are currently required;

2. Ban military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines; and

3. Make gun trafficking a federal crime, with real penalties for straw purchasers;

The epidemic of injury and death from gun violence is a plague on America, especially since the toll it takes on our families is preventable. Our nation’s families deserve to be safe and free in their schools, movie theaters, workplaces and their homes. We ask Congress, in honor and memory of our loved ones, to support the measures that the President has put forward to help stem the epidemic of gun violence.

Our precious children and family members who were so brutally murdered on December 14th deserve nothing less.

Sincerely,

I don't understand. Does this mean that due to their tragedy these people are better than the rest of us and able to curtail our rights?
I refuse to comply.
Yvan Bryzinski March 13, 2013 at 09:18 am
I refuse to comply.
None of these deeply ignorant ideas would have done anything at all to prevent this tragedy.
k-9 lover March 13, 2013 at 11:37 am
It sure is looking that way. Instead of enforcing laws that exist against criminals, lets strap the law abiding with more restrictions. The mentally ill issue is pushed to the back burner because "its a more complicated issue " that will quietly disappear
Know what's going on March 13, 2013 at 02:03 pm
What a head-hiding shame that we have people in our town who don't really understand the unalienable right given to us by the 2nd Ammendment but instead need to have the right to have a weapon that massacres others.
How shameful.
Yvan Bryzinski March 13, 2013 at 05:19 pm
I think the comments above yours indicate that people understand the Second Amendment just fine.
If you think that there is any "inalienable right given to us by the 2nd Amendment", then it demonstrates that it is you, who is, quite frankly, utterly missing the point. The 2nd isn't "granting" you anything. It is a constraint put on the Government, that's why it states, and I quote: "…shall NOT be infringed." Actually, in all candor, the only thing "shameful" I've read in these comments, is the ignorance, displayed by a fellow citizen, of the principle social contract of this country, known as the Constitution.
greg cann March 14, 2013 at 03:21 am
We CAN devise regulations that both further protections against "gun violence" and do not infringe on the 2nd amendment. There's nothing ignorant in desiring constitutionally consistent regulations to further the protections owed to our citizenry - that's our overriding social contract.
Nick March 20, 2013 at 07:17 pm
So the 20,000 laws on the books that arent being enforced arent enough?
The problem in your statement is, not a single Constitutionally consistent regulation has been proposed. And we also dont have any social contracts. This is a free society not bound by any social contracts or pressures.
Nick March 20, 2013 at 07:24 pm
Which weapon is that? last I checked... baseball bats and hammers kill more Americans than so-called "assault rifles"....which also havent been used in any school shooting. Handguns kill more Americans BY FAR than rifles...yet no one is talking about banning handguns. If you truly claim to want to stop gun violence, why not try for banning handguns?
First off, the word assault rifle is a made up word by the gun grabbing lobby and the Brady Campaign. The rifle used by the Newtown shooter was just a regular semi-auto rifle. And there wouldn't of been a massacre had someone else been there with a gun to stop the shooter. He went unmolested for at least 20 minutes before the cops got there, and then took their time trying to figure out what was going on. Its obvious YOU dont really understand the 2nd Amendment. The 2nd Amendment wasnt a right "given" to us, it's a God given right, a human right. The 2nd Amendment (and the whole Constitution) doesnt give us our rights, it PROTECTS our rights from the government. The language used in the Constitution is that of speaking to Congress, not citizens. "Congress shall pass no law...", "Congress shall not infringe...", etc.
Walt March 20, 2013 at 08:25 pm
Nick are you off your meds? 2nd amendment a god given right?!? Let me clue you in, there is no such thing as a god given right, anything that has been written, approved, voted on or granted was done BY MAN. Personally, I'd like to see a Constitutional Convention to clean up all the antiquated aspects of these documents.
Lily March 22, 2013 at 09:40 pm
My Lord, Nick, you are extremely stupid, aren't you? I don't even know what to say.
Nick March 23, 2013 at 02:58 am
So you cant debate specifically what I said that was stupid, so you just resort to name calling. Brilliant debating skills. LOL
Nick March 23, 2013 at 03:02 am
You're not very bright. The right to defend ourselves and our families is a God given right. Yes, the 2nd Amendment, is a God given right, and our Founding Fathers agreed. You obviously never read a history book, and dont know that the Constitution PROTECTS our rights, it doesnt grant them. The Constitution LIMITS the government.
And nothing is antiquated in the Constitution. The very intelligent and educated authors of that document were futurists and scientists, and wrote the Constitution to specifically be future proof. Antiquated? So I guess we should ban your stupid arse from free speech on the internet because hey, we didnt have the internet back when the Constitution was written. Wow, and you have the nerve to claim Im off my meds. You need to get a brain or go back to school, because you are the epitome of a low information voter. If you dont like the Constitution, go move to Europe or North Korea you jackwagon.
Nick March 23, 2013 at 03:04 am
Obviously. It seems that everyone else loses their rights when a tragedy occurs, and only those directly affected and emotionally tied to the issue are allowed to vote and make knee jerk laws.

To clarify, for those who are wondering why we can't just take the two cats up with us, we alreadyRead More have four cats, and a dog. We could only take two of the four cats with us, plus the dog (who is 14yrs. old.) The limit for the rental is three pets... this was a hard decision for us all. We would have taken them all if we could.

Now that Sam has been found, the reason he ran off was due to the sound of gunfire at RooseveltRead More Forest in the early afternoon as his master was getting ready to take him out of his car. All had been quiet, the park was open, so the loud bangs were a surprise - both to Sam and his "Dad". To the best of my knowledge, when the shooting range is used by the Stratford PD, the park is closed to the public. It was that way always and I believe still is. But now, with non-Stratford police personnel using the range, obviously the Park is NOT closed as was observed/heard yesterday at 2 separate time periods of the day. The range is used by at least one other police department. Of course, there could be unauthorized people using the range too. I just don't know. But what I do know that yesterday (Wed), there was shooting early afternoon, and then again around 6PM. I observed at around 5:00PM, a little boy running up the dirt road that leads to the shooting range. The park remained opened all day! The shooting was NOT being done by the Stratford Police. People do not always stick to the trails, and as we all know, children can be quite curious. Who is to say a child and/or adult gets near the berm or behind it and someone shoots over the berm? What goes up, has to come down. I also was told that neighbors say there is shooting going on quite frequently, even on Sundays. I doubt that this is from Stratford PD, because outdoor shooting usually occurs for a week or so, twice a year. Tighter controls must be done! Surely, the parking area can be checked for vehicles... but I observed yesterday people entering the parking area (adjacent to the driveway leading up to the range) on foot, on bicycles, and motorcycles. So people could be in the park even when no vehicles are observed in the lot. Safety is key here! Procedures need to be put in place and perhaps limitations on when other police department(s) can use the range. It is not fair to the surrounding residents to have to hear the bang bang bang on Saturdays and Sundays. It scares some of them, and I know that one person who lives nearby says her dog gets scared right inside their house! What will it take? A child or an adult wandering near the range, thinking it is OK because the Forest is open... and then, all of a sudden, there is shooting and one gets shot, especially a child? This may sound extreme, but children can move quick and suddenly. I think of that little boy running up toward the range. He could have very well traveled through the woods. I can picture bullets being shot over the berm, not on purpose, but it can happen. Or shots go to the left or to the right; and people could be in the same general area - out of sight of the shooters. Bottom Line: The "public" can not be in the park while the range is "live", or in other words, when there is shooting taking place. As how to ensure that the public is not in the park, is not for me to determine. But the Town has to step up to the plate and address this very important issue.

I hope people note how these comments go. Anonymous right-wingers try to change the discussion,Read More prove a point that no one is arguing, and then declare victory. Both "Goodie Bassett" and "Reagan Night" say Ms. Daponte is lying because Tony Smith won't be removed from office. I just re-read Beth's piece to see where she made this claim, but she never said anything of the sort. What she did say was "Both Tony and Linda serve until January 1, 2016." So, where's the "half-truth"? The point of the post is that the new land use District II, comprised of the 3rd & 4th council districts, has no representation on any of these boards. Tony Smith will be the District II Zoning Commissioner, even though he doesn't live in that district. The extreme right can't defend this, so they try to change the subject.

What a wonderful town we live in that the only problem we have worthwhile to discuss is golf cartsRead More driving down the street! WHO CARES? I have kids riding their go carts and mini bikes around our neighborhood. They learn how to fix them and have some fun which doen't include stealing or damaging my property. Actually I enjoy helping them and occasionally lend them a tool or two. The parents make them be considerate by not allowing them to ride around early morning or late evenings. SO WHO CARES! I guess you will want to stop all the people at Oronoque condos from driving across the road up there too? Hey..on the road is on the road. Again, WHO CARES? Get informed and worry about a real problem facing us here in town!
