Daponte: Stratford Attorney Should Be Audited Following Arrest

Beth Daponte, a Democratic running for mayor this fall, says she was 'dismayed' when she read an attorney 'chose to represent the town' was arrested on drug and theft charges.

By Beth Daponte

The citizens of Stratford have every right to expect attorneys who represent the town to have as much integrity as lawyers they would hire for their personal business.

I was dismayed to read that Garrett Denniston, an attorney that the Harkins administration chose to represent the town in labor arbitration and other important issues, is facing drug-related charges and theft charges that have arisen from him allegedly stealing golf clubs and breaking into pro shops.

Of course, as a Stratford taxpayer, I worry about the quality of the services Mr. Denniston provided to the town, his judgment on important issues, and Mayor Harkins' judgment in the hiring of Mr. Denniston.

Given Mr. Denniston’s apparent lack of integrity, I am calling for a performance audit of Mr. Denniston’s work for the town and a financial audit of any monies he may have had access to as an attorney working for the town.

Stratford’s taxpayers have a right to know about how Mr. Denniston executed his work for the Town of Stratford.
