Two Stratford Families Displaced by House Fire

American Red Cross is providing emergency assistance to the families.

Eight Stratford residents have been displaced from their home following a fire early this morning at 395 Columbus Avenue.

Stratford firefighters got the call about the blaze at the duplex at about 12:30 a.m. April 21 and responded with seven units. Upon arrival crews had heavy fire on the first and second floors, with extension to the opposite side of the duplex, according to a post on the Stratford Fire Department Local 998 Facebook page.

Using three handline hoses, firefighters reportedly had the main body of the fire knocked down in under five minutes. The fire was caught on video by DoingItLocal.com.

The two families -- four adults and four children -- are now receiving help from the American Red Cross, including emergency housing, food and clothing needs. There were no reports of injuries related to the fire.

According to a press release from the nonprofit, the Red Cross is also providing comfort kits, containing age and gender appropriate personal care items such as toothbrushes, deodorant, shaving supplies and other items a family might not have been able to gather in the rush to escape the fire. Children's kits include a stuffed toy.
