An armed holdup of a Milford bank Tuesday was foiled when the suspected robbers couldn’t open the locked drawers containing the dough they desired, police said.

Police said they were called to Wells Fargo Bank on Cherry Street 10:48 a.m. Tuesday after representatives there told them two males entered the bank with one brandishing a handgun and the other going straight for the cash drawers.

“Finding all the drawers locked, the males fled the bank and left in a grey-colored Infinity SUV-type vehicle,” Milford police Lt. Vaughan Dumas said in a release.

A Milford police detective traveling in an unmarked vehicle on I-95 southbound spotted a car matching the description of the suspected vehicle and followed the operator as he exited the thruway in Stratford, Dumas said.

After encountering a marked Stratford police cruiser upon turning onto Columbus Street, the passenger of the suspected vehicle attempted to flee on foot while the driver continued down the road, the lieutenant said.

The driver was taken into custody further down Columbus Street and the passenger was located with the help of a Stratford K9 unit inside a home on the road, Dumas said.

The operator of the suspected vehicle is identified as Deveral Webley, 32, of Kossuth Street in Bridgeport. And the passenger is identified as Nathaniel Campbell, 27, of Lenox Avenue in Bridgeport.

Dumas said the investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.

There were no reported injuries in the holdup or subsequent pursuit, he said.
