On Feb. 14, Walgreens on Barnum Avenue called police to report a shoplifting. Officer Legan responded on the report that a male had stolen merchandise and was reported to be on Broadbridge Avenue. Upon arrival, Officers Lindsey and Goode were already on the scene with a male, later identified as Alfredo Sacarello-Diaz, 51, of West Haven. Representing Walgreens was its loss prevention official who said he was behind Walgreens when he observed the man run from the store with merchandise falling from his jacket. The official pursued when the alleged shoplifter pulled out a box cutter-style knife, trying to cut the Walgreens official. A scuffle ensued and Sacarello-Diaz told his pursuer that he was a drug addict with AIDS as he attempted to bite him and cut him again. The Walgreens official, later identified as Benjamin Mieles, held Sacarello-Diaz until police arrived. During the apprehension, Mieles sustained a minor cut to his hand but did not request medical attention. Mieles told police that he believed the cut happened when he fell to the ground. Meanwhile, the Walgreens manager told police that he was informed by a customer that another customer was observed cutting down cameras from the store, the description fitting the suspect in custody. Walgreens reported the value of the stolen property at $476.95. Sacarello-Diaz was charged with 2nd degree robbery, threatening and 6th degree larceny.
