Stratford Man ID'd as Fatality in Crash Last Week

Joseph Witkavitch died from injuries sustained in a two-car accident in East Hampton, police said Tuesday.

Police Tuesday identified the drivers involved in a two-car collision on Route 66 last week as Joseph Witkavitch, 67, and Nicholas Pignatello, 33.

Witkavitch, a Stratford resident, died from his injuries after being flown to Hartford Hospital. Police said he was driving a Toyota Prius when the accident occurred near the intersection with Route 151.

Pignatello, of East Hampton, was driving a pick-up truck when the accident happened. Police said both vehicles collided head-on at about 5:41 p.m. Saturday.

Pignatello sustained serious injuries from the crash, and was also treated at Hartford Hospital. He has since been released. 

Police have not provided any further details as to what may have caused the crash. The accident is still under investigation and no charges have been filed.
