A 48-year-old Stratford man was issued an infraction for creating a public disturbance Saturday after police said he sprayed a man with a water gun from the driver's seat of his car.

William Spear of Lynncrest Drive reportedly caused an outrage in the parking lot of the on Main Street around 10 p.m. when he rolled down his driver's side window, shot the water gun at another man and sped off, police said.

An onlooker was reportedly able to read the license plate on Spear's pickup and relayed that information to police, who then confronted Spear at his residence. Before knocking on the door, police said they spotted a water gun on the passenger's seat of Spear's pickup.

Spear denied shooting anyone with the water gun, even after police said they had two sworn statements saying he did, according to police, who added that the 48-year-old "appeared to be extremely intoxicated" while being interviewed.

After reading this story, I had to double check the date of the article to make sure that, during the night, the year didn’t magically slip back to 1974—making me six years old all over again. I can’t believe that this is what a great nation has been reduced to; a grown man allegedly out spraying other grown men with water guns, cops having to deal with this garbage, and even passersby being forced to give statements to what they witnessed. I’ll tell you what the problem is people, stop watching the popular culture trendiness that is propagated on television and you’ll be able to avoid doing stupid things to your neighbors. Turn the stupid able shows off, stop watching Funny Videos, and go back to reading. What a damned shame—I feel bad for the cops. Spending their shift dealing with death, rape, robbery and then having to scale their abilities down to super soakers must be like working in the real Twilight Zone for them. Say "NO" to Make Your Day in our schools this season, because while you're caught up watching America Dances With Zombies, the kids are being educated by them under this program.

Paradise Green changed when 7-11 opened. Never should have happened. People hang around there all the time - loitering.

I feel this mans frustration. He was probably harassed by the gangs of drug crazed kids that intimidate anyone that goes to 7-11 at night. If the police would inforce the loitering laws this all would have been avoided.

In the grand scheme of things.... what is a little water? The cops were called over a little water? I think people need to grow up. On the other hand... the police need to do a much better job of curbing the drugs and guns all throughout this town. Oh, and maybe if the 'kids' had somewhere they were allowed to go, they would go there instead of hanging around town. Not all kids are interested in sports and that is all there is for them to do.

...and if he peed in the water gun and squirted people with it, that would be a different story?

Great point.

Poor kid who was shot has some problems. For those of you who frequent the green he is the young man that 'bobs' and whistles for some uncontrolled reason. A very polite and harmless young man that doesn't deserve to be bullied especially by older 'adults.'

Wow those cops are really making a dent in crime & violence - worth every penny when they retire at those $ 100,000 pensions. Make's me so proud & feels so safe.
