I-95 Exit Closure Planned for Fairfield Accident Reconstruction

Police will be shutting down Chambers Street and the exit 24 off ramp on Interstate 95 south.

Fairfield Police will be reconstructing an accident in which a woman's car came barreling off Interstate 95 and slammed into a Cumberland Farms gas station.

The reconstruction, being done as part of the department's investigation, will lead to the closure of Chambers Street and the exit 24 off ramp on Interstate 95 south, according to Fairfield Police Lt. James Perez. The reconstruction is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. on April 2, Perez said.

The 31-year-old woman behind the wheel of the vehicle that crashed was arrested this week for driving under the influence, among other charges. The March 24 crash sent four people to the hospital, including an 18-month-old.

The crash was caught on video by a surveillance camera at nearby business, and police had estimated the car was traveling at about 70 miles per hour when it smashed into a concrete gas bump barrier, several vehicles and, ultimately, the front of the gas station building.

Perez said the accident reconstruction team will recreate the accident, at about half the speed, to more accurately determine the speed the woman was traveling, as part of their investigation.
