Resident Nabs Suspected Bicycle Thief

The following arrest information was supplied by the Stratford Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Police said a Stratford resident apprehended the person who allegedly stole his bicycle from the railroad station shortly after he discovered it missing.

Police said the resident, who was not identified, uses the bicycle to ride from his house to the station for his commute to New York City. The police report said he returned to Stratford around 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 16, and found the bicycle missing from the tree he chained it to.

The report said the resident, resigned to the theft, began walking home, only to notice another man riding his bicycle in Stratford Center, about a block from the train station.

Officers reportedly arrived to find the resident holding the bicycle thief for them.

Police said Donald MacKay, 54, of 280 Judson Place, Stratford, admitted stealing the bike. He also allegedly had the resident’s broken lock and bicycle cable in his possession.

MacKay was charged with sixth-degree larceny and criminal mischief in the third degree. He was held on $100 bond and scheduled for a court appearance on Sept. 1.
