Police Blotter - Stratford

Enforcement actions taken by Stratford police from March 19 through March 22.

On March 19, police was parked roadside on Ferry Boulevard near Orchard Street checking passing vehicles when a black Camry traveling east on Ferry Boulevard was found to be displaying a license plate that belonged on another vehicle. The operator, Viviana Miranda, 31, of Bridgeport, told police that the vehicle was not registered, but she did produce a valid insurance card, although she did not have a driver’s license. She was charged with misuse of plates, operating an unregistered motor vehicle and operating a motor vehicle without a license. She was released on a promise to appear in court on March 29.

On March 19, police were dispatched to Wal-Mart on Barnum Avenue Cutoff on a complaint of a shoplifting. Upon arrival, police met with a store security official who had detained a man identified as Hector Santiago, 42, of Bridgeport, who was accused of attempting to steal $72.74 worth of merchandise from the store. The Wal-Mart official provided a written complaint, which stated that Santiago had entered the store and removed a pair of boots from a box, put them on and left the old shoes in the box. Santiago then allegedly took another box of shoes and concealed three DVDs in shoe box and attempted to leave the store wearing the new boots and other shoes in the box with the DVDs without paying. It was at this time that he was stopped by store officials and detained. Santiago admitted to police that he had attempted to steal the items and that he had been drinking. He told police that he had “f&^%$ up” and was taken to headquarters where he was charged with larceny. He was held in $500 bond pending a March 30 court date.

On March 22, police were dispatched to Stop & Shop on East Main Street for the report of a shoplifting that had just occurred by a man allegedly wearing a green coat and brown glasses who stole multiple food items and left the store. Upon arrival, police checked the area and located a man matching that description walking south through the Wal-Mart parking lot. The man, Braden O’Sullivan, 21, of Patterson Avenue, was stopped and admitted to police that he took the items. He also told police that he was stopped by a loss prevention official at the door, who told him to drop the items, which he did, and then he left. O’Sullivan said he was taking the food for himself and officers reported the smell of alcohol on his breath. An interview with a store employee confirmed O’Sullivan’s story. In addition, there was a second person with O’Sullivan, who did pay for his items. The value of the items O’Sullivan attempted to take was $112. He was charged with larceny and released on a promise to appear in court on March 31.
