Police: 12 Tips to Prevent Home Burglary

Most important: never intervene yourself, contact the police.

Keeping your home safe and secure is always a concern. Particularly now, with reports that residential burglaries are on the rise throughout the country.

To help homeowners, one local Connecticut police department recently compiled a list of 12 tips to help prevent against theft and break-ins.

“By following these simple tips, we can all help to prevent home burglaries and keep everyone safe,” the Naugatuck Police stated on its website.

A slide show of the tips is shared above.

If you see a crime in progress or have been the victim of a crime, contact the Stratford Police at (203) 385-4130 or dial 9-1-1 in an emergency.

I'm surprised that there was no mention in the list of having a working alarm system. A google search came up with a number of sites that said that even having a sign out in front with the name of your alarm company will deter a number of thieves.

What good are 'neighborhood watch' signs, if when you report something obviously out of the ordinary the dispatcher AND police officers belittle yuir concerns? Friends of mine watched as a strange car drove into the neighborhood, was parked and a man got out a started to wax his car..since it is a small area, everyone knows everyone else. .he was definitely a STRANGER..and WHO drives their car onto an unknown area and starts waxing it down any way? Is that not 'unusual' behavior???..So my friends called the police. .When the dispatcher asked for a description, they stated he was a stranger and he was black...right away the dispatcher indicated they were being prejudicial in their concerns...The two Stratford police officers who came out to the site also indicated the same and stated that since it was a public street the man had a perfect right to be there and his behavior was entirely 'normal'!! REALLY??? waxing yuir car in a strange neighborhood and not yuir own is normal? ?? I doubt that!!!!! I wouldn't go into a strange area to wax my vehicle, I don't think that truly is a 'nirnal' thing to do!!!!! Again what good are neighborhood watch signs if the police make light of yuir concerns????? It seems to me that STRATFORD police officers AND their dispatchers need some training in how to truly deal with people's concerns..It doesn't matter what color the man was..The point is he was a STRANGER in a small neighborhood and that is the issue the police SHOULD HAVE ADDRESSED!!!! If the police officers treated me the way they did my friends you can be sure I would be in the phone demanding to speak to the police chief or the mayor asap!!! The way my friends were treated was WRONG WRONG WRONG!!!! Stratford police need to stop racing around town in their fancy new cars and PROPERLY ATTEND TO BUSINESS!!!!

How about having an NRA sticker that ought to give pause for concern. Regarding the suspicious waxer - Ok so you have a black man waxing his car on a public street. What else did he do that was suspicious? perhaps he had a hot date with a lady around the corner and wanted to make sure his car was in perfectly presentable condition. Also perhaps you should compose your comments in word and run spell check on it before posting it here. Punctuation is a pretty neat idea too, look into that.

Ok Mr . chambers. .The point still is..he was a stranger in an area where everyone knows who lives where and for how long. ..since it is an area made up of primarily young families and elderly people as well..I highly doubt he had a 'hot date' with ANYONE in that neighborhood. .yiu don't like the spelling errors in my post. .too damn bad..get a life..I don't need spelling and punctuation lessons from yiu... and don't waste my time telling me that man's behavior was 'normal' when it was obviously anything but! !!!! Do YOU take your car into a strange neighborhood to wax it down? ?? I doubt it...get real..my friends had legitimate concerns and as stated it WASN'T his color but he WAS a stranger!!! I have called the P.D. as well when a strange vehicle is parked in front if my house especially at night...the Police of course may or may not show up....no wonder more and more people are unhappy with the way their tax dollars are being used..yes we pay the salaries of the police so is it too much to ask that they actually perform the duties for which they are hired??
