Pair Has Shrimp 'Take Out' - Under Their Shirts

Escape foiled when store owner confronts men in parking lot and takes their car keys.

They weren't the brightest bulbs in the pack, as on March 16, police responded to the C-Town Supermarket at 360 Barnum Avenue on a report of a shoplifting/robbery in progress.

Upon arrival, police met with the store manager in the parking lot. Also in the lot leaning against his car was Glenroy King, 25, of Bridgeport.

The store manager told police that King was one of the males who shoplifted, adding that King allegedly pulled a knife on him and that King still had the knife.

Officers then detained King, and while patting him down found a knife in his back pocket.

The store manager told police that King and another male, later identified as James Nelson, 22, of Bridgeport, entered the store and walked to aisle one where each male took a bag of frozen shrimp and placed them under their shirts. Both males then walked past the cash register and out of the exit without paying.

The store manager confronted the pair in the parking lot next to King’s car and told Nelson to hand over the shrimp. Nelson refused.

At this time, King has entered the driver’s side of the car and was attempting to open the passenger side door for Nelson. While doing so, King dropped his car keys and the store manager picked them up.

King then allegedly exited the car, walked up to the store manager and displayed a knife while saying, “Give me my f#$%& keys.”

The store manager, when he saw the knife, backed off and the two males began walking away. Nelson took off running toward Boston Avenue while King stayed until police arrived.

The store manager swore out a statement to police, which was corroborated by a second witness, another store manager.

Meanwhile, other Stratford officers began a search for Nelson, who was located on Boston Avenue walking toward Bridgeport. The store manager positively identified Nelson.

Back at the store, a bag of shrimp was observed by police on the floor of King’s car. The second bag had been retrieved previously. The total value of the shrimp was $24.98.

While on the scene, police asked King for an explanation. King did not directly answer the question, but did say that he had acted alone.

After Nelson was asked, he stated that he was never at the plaza where the incident occurred.

King was charged with larceny and robbery. Bond was $10,000 and was placed in cell 2 pending a March 25 court date. Nelson was charged with robbery and larceny and also jailed on $10,000 bond awaiting his March 25 court appearance.

The shrimp was returned to its retail display case.
