Four Men Arrested for Weapon Possession That Led to School Lockdown

Police say two of the men had high-power pellet rifles and the other two were reportedly in possession of air soft handguns.

Stratford Police have arrested four men on multiple charges in relation to the incident on Tuesday afternoon that led to the lockdown of Wooster Middle School.

The men arrested are:

  • Chukwuemeke Onyerikwu, 19, of Stratford
  • Oladipupo Sule, 19, of Bridgeport
  • Joel Albornoz, 20, of Stratford
  • Ghalib Sanni, 20, of Bridgeport

All four were charged with:

  • Carrying a dangerous weapon
  • Breach of peace
  • Reckless endangerment/dangerous activity (town ordinance)
  • Possession of an air gun (town ordinance)
  • Weapon possession in a recreational area (town ordinance)

According to police, officers responded to the school at about 12:25 p.m. on Jan. 8 on report of someone behind the school with a rifle. Police located the suspects in the woods — two of them were reportedly carrying rifles — and officers ordered them to drop their weapons and get on the ground. The four men complied after several commands, police said.

Investigation determined that two of the individuals, Onyerikwu and Sule, were armed with high-power pellet rifles, police said. The rifles are reportedly designed for hunting small game.

The other two men, Albornoz and Sanni, had air soft handguns, which are designed to fire plastic pellets, police said.

"It did not appear that the four were on school property to cause any students or faculty harm," Stratford Police Lt. Frank Eannotti said. "The school that was placed in lockdown as result was cleared after officers conducted a search of the woods and adjacent grounds."

Police previously said the lockdown lasted about 20 minutes. One Wooster student who described her experience to Stratford Patch said it felt much longer.

Police said the Town of Stratford prohibits the possession of any air rifle, including BB guns and pellet guns. The ordinance also prohibits guns such as air soft, which shoot a plastic BB, especially when the item is used in an incident such as this, according to police.

All four men were held on a $5,000 bond each. They are scheduled to appear in Bridgeport Superior Court on Jan. 18.

Tuesday's incident comes about a month since a shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown — about 20 miles away from Stratford — claimed the life of 20 students and six educators.

Communities across the state have been on high alert since the Dec. 14 shooting in Newtown, and many towns have stepped up school safety measures, including Stratford, which implemented a new emergency notification system and established a "School Safety Committee."

One Stratford woman has also started a petition to have a police officer stationed at each school in town.

“In light of recent events it’s just more sensitive and there’s going to be zero tolerance,” Stratford Deputy Police Chief Joseph McNeil said.

How about digging a little deeper, why not go through the town statutes and dig up the definitions of each of these ordinance violations. I'd be really interested to see the one about not having an air gun.

Now the craziness starts. These guys might had a threatening appearance justifying police intervention. But after it is determined that they were no real threat (pellet and BB guns are clearly not weapons of mass destruction), the cops got po'd and misused their discretionary authority by throwing the book at these guys. Frankly, if this is the way our police intend to respond to the problems revealed by the Newtown massacre, we are in trouble.

Idiocy has it's own special rewards. Handcuffs.

Lots of the kids have pellet and BB guns and the kids were probably in the woods having target practice. Highly unlikely were out to gun any one down like some lone wolf crazed shooter. However now the insanity will begin after guns and the right to bear arms.

Stay on your own property with such nonsense.... where is thier common sence? Charge them with stupidity as well. Stay away from any public places, how would anyone know it wasn't a situation that could of been horrifying!
christina January 10, 2013 at 11:28 pm
its situations like these that cause such a bad reputation to Airsofters. what happened to common sense and keeping it on the field? http://www.airsplat.com/airsoft-fields.htm
Matt J January 11, 2013 at 04:38 am
Those kids should have had the common sense to determine that wasn't the right place to go at this place in time. They had what was coming to them going within that proximity of a school. Too bad this is the way we have to look at these type of situations these days, back even 5 years ago no one would have thought a thing about it.

WHAT FOOLS THEY WERE!
Melissa January 12, 2013 at 03:27 pm
For all of you saying "Its no Big Deal", "They were just BB Guns". For all of you who are Think this is being Blown out of Proportion.....How about you STOP for a moment and THINK abut the Kids and Teachers who where in CLOSET'S, BATHROOMS..and UNDER LOCK DOWN for 25mins, not knowing they were "JUST BB GUNS". If you are that Insensitive, then you are NO BETTER than the IDIOTS who went on School Property for Target Practice...No Punishment is going to be enough to Erase the FEAR that these Students and Faculty felt that day. My guess is you dont have children, because if you do, you would see things very differently. All 4 of these Adult Men deserve Everything they have coming to them and More.
Melissa January 12, 2013 at 03:34 pm
Thank you for thinking of the Kids and Faculty of Wooster. I am getting so tired of the people saying, its no big deal, they were just BB Guns.
Chris Stevens January 14, 2013 at 03:44 am
Tom you really should get a clue, police are trained that any gun is a threat, a gun is a gun, the police are not mind readers and had no idea going into such situation that they were BB guns that by the way are against the town ordinance, let's not forget that the police have to answer to a supervisor who tell them what to do, maybe you should give the chief a call if you have a problem with the way the police handled this......
Robert Chambers January 15, 2013 at 02:14 am
But it wasn't was it. The police responded in force and properly and assessed the threat and dealt with it. Nobody is taking chances these days. Once the situation was found to be more stupidity than malice calmer heads should have prevailed. I will bet half of these "charges" will get thrown out in court.

They are an awful company, I called as well as e-mailed my displeasure with their new and easier toRead More navigate homepage and was met with surprise by the tech support person. My location says that I am in West Babylon NY when I am in Milford CT (can't change that), the e-mails delete willy nilly (note: be careful to pay attention to your highlighted e-mail as it is not always the one that is being deleted). Oh, and why on earth such a huge map of their optimum hotspots when I am at home and as their customer they should at least figure that I have the internet service so therefore no reason for a hot spot at home. I am totally amazed that nobody, not one person at Optimum took a look at that piece of junk and still thought that it was ready to release to the public? Best part is that they were so sure that we'd all love it that we cannot go back to the old home page. Simply beyond amazing.

I'm still waiting for them to figure out how to pause and rewind live TV. Apparently they areRead More working on it, and have been for the last 5 years.

To clarify, for those who are wondering why we can't just take the two cats up with us, we alreadyRead More have four cats, and a dog. We could only take two of the four cats with us, plus the dog (who is 14yrs. old.) The limit for the rental is three pets... this was a hard decision for us all. We would have taken them all if we could.

Now that Sam has been found, the reason he ran off was due to the sound of gunfire at RooseveltRead More Forest in the early afternoon as his master was getting ready to take him out of his car. All had been quiet, the park was open, so the loud bangs were a surprise - both to Sam and his "Dad". To the best of my knowledge, when the shooting range is used by the Stratford PD, the park is closed to the public. It was that way always and I believe still is. But now, with non-Stratford police personnel using the range, obviously the Park is NOT closed as was observed/heard yesterday at 2 separate time periods of the day. The range is used by at least one other police department. Of course, there could be unauthorized people using the range too. I just don't know. But what I do know that yesterday (Wed), there was shooting early afternoon, and then again around 6PM. I observed at around 5:00PM, a little boy running up the dirt road that leads to the shooting range. The park remained opened all day! The shooting was NOT being done by the Stratford Police. People do not always stick to the trails, and as we all know, children can be quite curious. Who is to say a child and/or adult gets near the berm or behind it and someone shoots over the berm? What goes up, has to come down. I also was told that neighbors say there is shooting going on quite frequently, even on Sundays. I doubt that this is from Stratford PD, because outdoor shooting usually occurs for a week or so, twice a year. Tighter controls must be done! Surely, the parking area can be checked for vehicles... but I observed yesterday people entering the parking area (adjacent to the driveway leading up to the range) on foot, on bicycles, and motorcycles. So people could be in the park even when no vehicles are observed in the lot. Safety is key here! Procedures need to be put in place and perhaps limitations on when other police department(s) can use the range. It is not fair to the surrounding residents to have to hear the bang bang bang on Saturdays and Sundays. It scares some of them, and I know that one person who lives nearby says her dog gets scared right inside their house! What will it take? A child or an adult wandering near the range, thinking it is OK because the Forest is open... and then, all of a sudden, there is shooting and one gets shot, especially a child? This may sound extreme, but children can move quick and suddenly. I think of that little boy running up toward the range. He could have very well traveled through the woods. I can picture bullets being shot over the berm, not on purpose, but it can happen. Or shots go to the left or to the right; and people could be in the same general area - out of sight of the shooters. Bottom Line: The "public" can not be in the park while the range is "live", or in other words, when there is shooting taking place. As how to ensure that the public is not in the park, is not for me to determine. But the Town has to step up to the plate and address this very important issue.

Reagan's quote is from the 1988 GOP convention that 'facts are stupid things'...John Adams made theRead More original quote.
Steve Raguskus June 15, 2013 at 10:20 am
I hope people note how these comments go. Anonymous right-wingers try to change the discussion,Read More prove a point that no one is arguing, and then declare victory. Both "Goodie Bassett" and "Reagan Night" say Ms. Daponte is lying because Tony Smith won't be removed from office. I just re-read Beth's piece to see where she made this claim, but she never said anything of the sort. What she did say was "Both Tony and Linda serve until January 1, 2016." So, where's the "half-truth"? The point of the post is that the new land use District II, comprised of the 3rd & 4th council districts, has no representation on any of these boards. Tony Smith will be the District II Zoning Commissioner, even though he doesn't live in that district. The extreme right can't defend this, so they try to change the subject.
richard brown June 15, 2013 at 12:29 pm
Isn't it odd that the half truths are written by people that won't sigh their real name but theRead More Democrats sign theirs. Huh, guess they don't want to be held accountable for their inuendo's and false acusations.
