Fire Tears Through Morehouse Avenue Kitchen

Residents awoke to a fire late Saturday night and escaped injury.

A Morehouse Avenue home was deemed uninhabitable after being damaged in a fire late Saturday night.

The structure fire at 215 Morehouse Ave. began in the kitchen at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, said Stratford Fire Lt. Matt Morse.

All items in the kitchen were destroyed in the blaze, Morse said. The residents of the ranch escaped injury and were seen trying to put out the fire with a garden house when firefighters arrived, he said.

Soon after they arrived, Morse said firefighters knocked down the flames with no reported injury.

In addition to the kitchen, there was smoke damage throughout the first floor, making the home uninhabitable, Morse said. Some of the vinyl siding outside the kitchen window was also damaged. He said the earliest the residents would be able to move back in would probably be a couple weeks.

The Red Cross is providing temporary lodging for the residents, Morse said.
