The Stratford Fire Department reports on its Facebook page that the MTA was called to cut power to the bridge, and the Sikorsky Aircraft Fire Department has sent its boat to assist in quelling the flames.

"Stratford Fire (E1, T5, Squad 4) and Milford Fire (E1, E3, E4) working to extinguish a burning wooden bulkhead underneath Housatonic river train trestle," the fire department reported on its Facebook page.

According to radio traffic heard by doingitlocal.com, "the fire is burning inside the 'fender' that is protecting the rail bridge and they might be there until it burns through and exposes itself. They said they could be there all night."

The Connecticut Post reports that the left lane of the southbound side was closed while firefighters worked to extinguish the fire. The joint effort comes about a day after the departments worked in a mutual aid capacity during a Stratford house fire.

Stratford Patch will provide updates to this story as they are made available.
