Fire Causes Extensive Damage to Stratford Home

Neighbor reports hearing an explosion when the blaze broke out.

A late afternoon fire Saturday caused extensive damage to a house on Light Street in Stratford, according to a fire department official.

Assistant Chief John Conway said the Stratford Fire Department received multiple 911 calls reporting the blaze. When firefighters arrived at 555 Light St., the fire had spread through the side and rear of the house and the attached garage.

"There was heavy smoke and flame to the side of the house," said Conway.

A neighbor, Suzette Cash, who lives across the street, said she heard what sounded like an explosion when the blaze started.

Other neighbors from more than a block away said they noticed a strong burning rubber smell when the fire first broke out.

The occupants of the house were not home at the time of the blaze. Conway said he did not have their names.

He said the cause of the fire is under investigation by the Stratford Fire Marshal.
