Fire at Abandoned Building in Stratford Deemed Suspicious

The origin of the fire was suspicious in nature, says Deputy Chief of Operations Jon Gottfried in the following press release.

At 4:51 p.m. Friday, the Stratford 911 center received a report of smoke coming from an abandoned industrial manufacturing structure located at 1255 West Broad St.

The first arriving Stratford Fire units at 4:57 p.m. reported smoke coming from the rear of the structure closest to the Metro-North Railroad right-of-way.

Impeded by locked fencing and non-operational fire hydrants on the vacant property, the fast actions by Stratford firefighters facilitated extinguishment of the fire which was contained to several former storage rooms.

The origin of the fire was suspicious in nature and the Stratford fire marshal’s office along with the building official was summoned to the scene to investigate.

Twenty one firefighters responded with four engines, one ladder, one shift commander, and two senior chief officers and one fire marshal. The last fire unit to leave the scene was at 6:28 p.m. The current owner of the structure was not available at the time of this press release, and the fire marshal’s office is continuing their investigation.
