Obituary: Betsy McCauley Ross, Age 75

Family and friends are invited to attend her funeral on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013 at 10 a.m. DIRECTLY at St. Mark Church 500 Wigwam Lane Stratford

Betsy McCauley Ross, age 75, of Stratford, beloved wife of Anthony (Tony) Ross passed away peacefully on Friday December 28, 2012 at Bridgeport Hospital surrounded by her loving family.

Betsy was born on March 26, 1937 in Bridgeport and was a lifelong Stratford resident, and Stratford High School graduate, Class of 1955. She was the retired Office Manager for Sterling House Community Center in Stratford.

Betsy was an extremely caring and generous person and always willing to help someone in need. She was active in the Democratic Town Committee and served as secretary for the Waterfront Commission, Short Beach Commission, the Inland Wetland Commission and many others.

The greatest joys of her life were spending time with her family and traveling with her late sister, Sue. She was an excellent seamstress making everything from prom dresses and flags for her family to doll clothes and quilts. Betsy loved watching sports especially Uconn Women’s Basketball and the New York Giants. She adored nothing more than sitting at Lake Zoar, reading a book and watching the boats go by.

Survivors, in addition to her husband Anthony of 56 years, include her devoted children Kim Carroll of Stratford, Anthony Ross Jr. and wife Cynthia of Shrewsbury, MA., Daniel Ross and wife Eileen of Southbury, Susan McNamara of Stratford, and her loving grandchildren Melissa, Colleen, Matthew, and Maura Carroll, Kristin and Nicole Ross, Kasey Sullivan, and Emma and Ethan McNamara; 3 brothers David McCauley and wife Ingrid, Milton (Mac) McCauley and wife Audrey, Jim McCauley and wife Carol, one sister Martha Anderson and many nieces and nephews who fondly referred to her as “Auntie B.” Betsy was predeceased by one son Richard Michael Ross and her sister Susan McCauley Unwin.

Family and friends are invited to attend her funeral on Thursday January 3, 2013 at 10 a.m. DIRECTLY at St. Mark Church 500 Wigwam Lane Stratford. Interment will follow in St. Michael’s Cemetery. Friends may call on Wednesday January 2, 2013 from 3-8 p.m. at the Galello-Luchansky Funeral Home 2220 Main Street Stratford.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Sterling House for contributions to the Betsy Ross Memorial Scholarship Fund 2283 Main Street Stratford. The family would like to thank the Stratford Fire Department and EMS as well as the many doctors and nurses at Bridgeport Hospital that treated her so well during her many trips to the hospital.
