Hudson Shakespeare Company to Perform “Cymbeline” at the Stratford Library

The Stratford Library, 2203 Main Street, will present the Hudson Shakespeare Company of New Jersey for its ninth annual season of classic productions in Stratford with their “Cymbeline” on Saturday, July 26 at 2 pm. Performed outside in the library’s scenic amphitheatre, the fully-staged and costumed performances are free and open to the public.

Returning for their second helping of summer Shakespeare in Stratford, the company takes the late fairy tale like romance of "Cymbeline" and transplants it to the Old West. Like many of Shakespeare's plays, the settings often lend themselves to a variety of different time periods. "Cymbeline”, with its fairy tale like setting of stern stepmothers, lost princes, wilderness settings and the doings of kings and princesses, slips well into a fantastical world of 1880s Americana. Written in 1608, "Cymbeline" is one of Shakespeare's late plays often known as "The Romances". These often include shades of tragedy and comedy, with a road trip and a dash of divine providence.

The Hudson Shakespeare Company is now in its 23rd season of touring Shakespeare and classical works in the tri-state region. At the Stratford Library, performances are held outside and patrons are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets to spread. In the event of inclement weather or extreme heat, the play will move inside to the air-conditioned Lovell Room.
