Council Rejects Proposed Fire Union Contract

Stratford Town Council members were worried that the meaning of the word 'compensation' in the contract could affect retirement pensions.

The over his retirement pension had new consequences this week when the Town Council rejected a new contract with the firefighters’ union.

According to the Connecticut Post, the question involves whether workers compensation awards for heart and hypertension should be considered as "compensation" under the terms of the contract, as retired Assistant Fire Chief Thomas Murray contended in his recent claim, or not, as town officials contend has historically been the rule.

According to the Post, more than half of the town employees who retired since 2006, including Murray, are receiving pension payments that exceed their annual base salary when they were employed.
