The Americanness of Barbecue (Video)

Local chef explains what makes barbecuing an American tradition.

The cliché goes “as American as apple pie,” but maybe it should be “as American as barbecue” instead.

There are the always popular hamburgers and hot dogs, and then there’s also the time-intensive, Southern-influenced barbecue that takes hours to get just right. The latter is what Joe Catalano, owner of on 11 Berwyn St. in Milford, specializes in.

He’s seen business skyrocket with the onset of warm weather, and according to the Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Association, Memorial Day is the second biggest day for barbecuing behind the Fourth of July. Catalano, a trained chef, explains in the above video what it is that makes barbecue a staple of American life.
